Q: “If I have surgery to improve one of my conditions, and the VA says that condition is fixed, will I lose my disability benefits?”
A: Unless the VA has deemed your condition “permanent,” it can review your rated conditions at any time.
But the VA is more likely to do so if they get information that leads them to believe you may have improved.
Getting surgery to improve one of your conditions could lead to a lower rating from the VA. It depends on the rating table for the particular condition. And it depends on the level of improvement you have.
This post is not meant to discourage any vet from getting surgery that could improve their life. The decision to have surgery is a personal one, and should be made based on the advice of your doctor, not whether or not your rating might be decreased.
