Ask A Lawyer: How long will it take for the VA to respond to my appeal?

Q: I was awarded a 10% disability in March 2010.

I appealed it and they received the appeal on May 28th, 2010.

It has been over 2 years since I have had any response. Is this normal?

A: Two years with no response from the VA on a claim for disability compensation is too long.

While it can take a while for the VA to rule on your appeal, more than a few months with no communication from the VA is unusual.

You should contact the VA right away to find out the status of your claim.

You can check online using the VA’s IRIS system https://iris.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/423.

You will need to register to do that: https://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits-portal/ebenefits.portal.

You can also try calling the VA at 800-827-1000 to get the status.
